My mother hated most things in this world. Capitalism. Politics. Working hard. Material possessions. And practically every human being (including herself). But she especially despised advertising. There were only two things she liked in life. Cooking. And cigarettes. The latter explained why she died an agonizing death from cancer broke, alone and a misanthrope all the way to the bitter end. But. The former explained why she hung up a magazine ad for Prince pasta sauce on the wall one day when I was still in the first grade (right next to her framed reprint of artist Andrew Wyeth's most famous painting "Christina's World.") I would recount the last part of this story to Mr. Barrie exactly two decades later while interning at Fallon. He asked if I wanted an autographed version to send to my mother. I thanked him for the kind offer, but replied, "No, she doesn't deserve it. You are probably the only person to ever get through to her. But I still can't." And that's my story about Bob.
